Inside Restaurant Management

Restaurant management involves scheduling and organizing workers so that there are a sufficient number of cooks, servers and hosts on hand to meet the demands of restaurant patrons. Managers are responsible for hiring and firing staff, ordering food supplies, taking inventory and replacing restaurant equipment. They may also train new employees, produce work schedules and make sure all of the restaurant employees work together efficiently to prepare meals and present them to customers in a professional, welcoming manner.

Education Information

Formal training in restaurant management is available at technical schools, community colleges and universities. Students can earn certificates or diplomas in restaurant management, as well as associate's, bachelor's and master's degrees in the subject. Although programs are available in restaurant management, many schools also offer restaurant management coursework as part of a hospitality program, which includes training for hotel and resort management.
