Inside Labor Studies

The labor studies field focuses on workers' organizations and rights. Labor studies scholars explore trends and concerns in the workforce, especially as they relate to underserved and minority populations. They are passionate about improving the quality of work environments, particularly for those facing discrimination or poverty. Prospective students should be effective communicators who can understand complex issues facing unions and low-income workers and articulate them to government and community leaders. Labor studies professionals may work in such areas as labor policy, conflict resolution, international labor or human resources.

Students majoring in labor studies can also pursue careers as social workers who focus on shaping public policy to better serve laborers. Social workers must meet licensing requirements established in their state to hold professional titles. Graduates are also eligible for work in government, labor unions, charitable organizations and other public service and community-based organizations. Doctoral degrees equip students to teach at the university level and further research in labor studies.
