A person who works in retail sales focuses on selling products to individuals in a retail environment. Retail sales is a physically demanding job that typically requires no formal training and often includes unconventional hours. Retail management positions often require a degree. Management positions typically involve supervising retail staff, managing store office operations, ordering stock and merchandising.

Sales representatives can work for wholesale businesses, manufacturers and technical companies. These individuals focus on business-to-business sales, rather than selling to the public. Inside sales often requires a lot of time spent on the phone, talking with business owners about purchasing products, while outside sales includes traveling to various businesses to sell merchandise in person. There is usually no formal education requirement for these positions, although some may require a degree.
