Individuals who want to work in prepress, publishing and image design, generally referred to as desktop publishing, have a variety of career options. These occupations are related to the design and preparation of materials, usually with the help of computer programs, to be printed at a commercial printer or using a company's existing printers. Jobs are available as scanner operator, visual communications designer, graphic designer, digital image technician and layout editor. Some of these careers focus on the process of printing while others involve using computer software to lay out projects for printing or digital publication.

The rise of digital publishing has changed the printing and publication industry. Today, both desktop publishing and print shops work in tandem in the publication of magazines, newspapers and comic books, or in the official publications of organizations and corporations, such as newsletters, handbooks, advertisements and promotional materials.
