Inside the Library Assistant Career

Library assistants work in a variety of library environments, including academic, law, corporate, government, school and public libraries. Most library assistants work under the supervision of a librarian and perform a range of clerical, administrative and customer service duties. These may include checking books in and out at the circulation desk, helping acquire, prepare, and organize library materials, assisting users with reference issues and providing library users with computer instruction.

In smaller libraries, library assistants often handle a variety of duties related to daily library operations, while those working in larger libraries are more likely to perform specialized duties. Library assistants may also go by other titles, including library aide, circulation assistant, library media assistant, media aide and library technical assistant.
