Science Teacher Education
Students in a science teacher education program can explore science, curriculum development and classroom management. Graduates can find employment at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Read on for more information.
Inside Science Teacher Education
Science teachers are responsible for teaching students about the natural world, its complexity and the patterns found in nature. Most science teachers instruct in junior high or high schools. Elementary teachers also teach science, though they typically teach a range of other subjects as well.
Education Information
Aspiring science teachers can complete undergraduate majors in chemistry or physics education, or in science education with concentration options in subjects like biology or earth science. They can also complete bachelor's degree programs in one of a variety of science subjects while simultaneously studying education, or they can later complete graduate certificates or a master's degree programs in teaching or science teaching.
Typical course topics include science labs, curriculum creation, using technology in the classroom and methods for teaching scientific concepts. Students can also take advanced math courses, particularly if they're teaching physics or chemistry, and advanced science courses. Before graduation, a student must typically complete a 1-semester student teaching experience. The following articles illustrate various options for pursuing a science teaching degree program.

Distance Learning Options
Students who live too far away from a prospective school or who have busy schedules may consider online programs, which can be completed from a distance and at a student's own pace. Typically, students must still complete on-site student teaching experiences to complete online programs. Review the links listed below for more details about online learning options.
Required Skills
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics states that teachers need to be able to communicate effectively, inspire confidence in their students, motivate them and come up with ways to share information in a way that they understand. Organization and patience are also qualities valued in teachers (www.bls.gov).
Licensing Information
Licensure for public school teachers is required in all U.S. states, though requirements for licensure may vary. At the very least, students must have earned a bachelor's degree, though continuing education may be required, and they must demonstrate competency in their area of study. Licensure is divided between the elementary, middle and high school levels.
Career Options
Becoming a science teacher can result in the study of one of multiple scientific topics. The following links could be useful in determining what kind of teacher an individual might want to become.
Employment Outlook and Salary Information
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projected that job opportunities for middle school teachers would increase by 12% during the 2012-2022 decade, while the number of high school teachers was only projected to rise 6% over the same period. As of May 2013, the median annual salary for middle school teachers was $53,940, and for secondary teachers it was $55,360 (www.bls.gov).
