Inside Speech Teacher Education

A speech teacher is more commonly referred to as a speech-language pathologist. A speech-language pathologist works with children or adults who have speech, language or hearing disorders. Speech-language pathologists are responsible for helping patients learn how to communicate effectively. Speech-language pathologists ultimately assist people who suffer from stuttering disorders, non-native English speakers who'd like to modify their accents, those who need help with their vocal control and stroke and brain trauma patients who need assistance redeveloping their language, speech and swallowing functions. A speech-language pathologist, who works in an educational setting, is responsible for coordinating individual or group speech programs.

Education Information

Students interested in becoming speech-language pathologists can start the process by obtaining a bachelor's degree in communication sciences and disorders. To practice speech-language pathology and obtain a license as a speech-language pathologist, a master's degree in audiology, speech-language pathology or speech, language and hearing science is required. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the requirements to become a licensed speech-language pathologist consist of a master's degree from an accredited college or university, a passing score on the national examination on speech-language pathology, 300-375 hours of supervised clinical experience and nine months of post graduate professional clinical experience (www.bls.gov).
