Inside African Studies

African studies is an interdisciplinary field covering African history, arts, politics, languages and the displacement of African peoples. Special topics in African studies are often rooted in contemporary political conflicts, foreign imperialism and long-accepted stereotypes and myths about the continent and its populations. Students in African studies programs also develop a wide skill set in research and analytical thinking.

Education Information

African, African-American and international studies programs can be found at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Coursework includes studies in the many African languages, religions, rulers and music types. In addition, students learn about economics, psychology, sociology and anthropology. They also take courses focused on other cultures, such as Asian American studies or Native American studies. Students can also participate in study abroad programs to gain firsthand experience by living in one or more African countries. Most African studies programs prepare graduates for continued education in the field.
