South Asia is generally considered to comprise India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and the Maldives. Sometimes, because of historical considerations, Myanmar and Afghanistan are also included. Languages that are typically studied in this field are Punjabi, Khowar, Urdu, Bangla or Bengali, Malayalam, Hindi, Marathi, Sanskrit, Pali, Tamil, Tibetan and Telugu.

Study opportunities are many. A few bachelor's degree programs are available, usually in Asian studies with a concentration in South or Southeast Asia. Students may work for a Certificate in Asian Studies with a focus on South Asia to accompany almost any degree at any level from bachelor's to doctoral. Master of Arts and Ph.D. degrees in South Asian studies are also offered. Programs in area and cultural studies are also relevant options. Coursework may concentrate on the social sciences, religion, history and literature of the countries of Southern Asia, with required language courses.
