Canadian Studies

Students interested in learning about Canadian history and culture may enroll in a Canadian studies degree program. While not a common major, several universities in the U.S. offer undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Canadian studies.

Inside Canadian Studies

Canada's history, culture, linguistic traditions, and foreign and domestic policies are just a few of the topics covered in a Canadian studies program. These programs tend to be interdisciplinary, and they emphasize the development of students' reading, writing and critical thinking skills.

Education Information

Students in Canadian studies degree programs take courses that focus on Canadian geography, art and government. Students will also study topics like Quebec history and French culture. Often, degree programs will require or highly recommend that students complete French language courses in order to better understand Canada's unique French roots. Students can earn bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in Canadian studies. Only a few universities in the U.S. offer graduate-level degree programs in Canadian studies; bachelor's degree programs are more common.
