Inside African-American Studies

Students in African-American studies programs learn about the social, cultural, historical and political structures of people of African descent. They may study everything from jazz and contemporary African art to discrimination and African diaspora. This interdisciplinary field draws on the social sciences, arts and humanities to approach topics from varying perspectives and gain a broad understanding of historical and contemporary issues that pertain to African Americans.

Graduates of African-American studies programs may pursue a number of careers that require a strong liberal arts education. Those with bachelor's degrees in African-American studies might consider careers in social services, cultural affairs or business, for instance. Those who simultaneously complete teaching education and certification may work in public schools as teachers. Additional career opportunities may be found in the areas of law, international relations, social work or psychology, though many professions in these fields often entail additional education.
