Inside Gay and Lesbian Studies

Gay and lesbian studies is a subdivision in the field of gender studies, examining the characteristics and implications of the homosexual culture, along with its bisexual and transgender equivalents. Most degree programs in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) studies offer multidisciplinary curricula that educate students in various social science-related aspects of this field, such as equality and discrimination, gender relations and identity, politics, music and literature, sexuality theory, contemporary cultural diversity, gender sociology and family relations.

Students may pursue undergraduate or graduate certificates in LGBT studies or declare a minor in a related bachelor's program, such as gender studies or women's studies. Both certificate and academic minor programs in gay and lesbian studies generally require completion of between four and six relevant courses.
