Cartographers, or mapmakers, collect spatial data and map the Earth's continually changing surface for a variety of purposes in business, government, science and industry. Cartographers usually have bachelor's degrees in fields such as engineering, geography, forestry or one of the physical sciences. Job prospects are promising due to advances in and use of GIS and remote sensing technologies.

Education Information

Cartographers typically earn a 4-year bachelor's degree in geography or a physical science with an emphasis in cartography or GIS; students can also choose a 2-year associate's degree in GIS. Those interested in advancement or increased specialization can earn a postgraduate degree in geography or a closely related field. Master's degrees typically require two additional years of study beyond a bachelor's degree, while doctoral degrees can take 3-5 additional years.
