Apparel and Textile Manufacturing

Apparel and textile manufacturing is more than just dress making. Every step, from fabric creation to fashion design, requires special training. If you love fashion and have an eye for detail, apparel and textile manufacturing could be a fit for you.

Inside Apparel and Textile Manufacturing

All garments, whether they're socks or suit coats, start out as a fiber in a textile mill. Textile mills use giant machines to treat fibers to change the texture, appearance or durability and then weave them into fabrics. This process requires specialized professionals, like machinists, engineers and designers. After fabrics have been created, they're shipped to apparel manufacturers where they're cut and sewn to create garments.

Education Information

There are many different types of careers available in this field, and there are equal numbers of education requirements. Many jobs held in the apparel and textile manufacturing field are production level, like tailors, machinists or dyers. These jobs usually require a GED or high school diploma and extensive on-the-job training. Fashion designers may have an associate's or bachelor's degree and take classes in fashion sketching, computer-aided pattern drafting or apparel construction.
