Museum Studies

Museums play an important role in the preservation of history. Extensive education is necessary to enter this field, but for those interested in preserving history and educating others on its importance, it can be a gratifying career choice.

Inside Museum Studies

Museum studies, also called museology, is the study of the design, organization and management of museums. Degree programs can help students gain an understanding of all facets of the museum business, from organization and administration to the acquisition, care and conservancy of historic artifacts and works of art. Graduates of museum studies can pursue a variety of careers, from administration and fundraising to collections management, exhibition development and historic preservation.

Education Information

A minimum of a master's degree is typically required for a job in a museum or historic preservation setting. Students may start with a Bachelor of Arts program in museum studies or a related field, like history, art history or archeology. At the master's level, a program in museum studies is a good choice; library science can also be a good option for those who want to work in museum archives.
