The Talmud is a sacred text teaching Jewish law, customs, history and ethics, and is composed of the Mishnah and the Gemara. An analysis of the original Aramaic and Hebrew text is the center of Talmudic studies.

Education Information

Hebrew universities most commonly offer programs in Talmudic studies at bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels. Other schools offer religious studies or foreign language programs that can include Talmudic or Jewish studies. Students learn about Jewish philosophy, pedagogical skills and societal ethics. Coursework covers Judaic heritage through study of both the Babylonian and the Palestinian Talmud. Students also learn about the role of ethics in modern society.
