Aircraft mechanics perform preventative maintenance and repairs on airplanes. Airframe mechanics are able to work on any part of an aircraft except turbines, propellers and electronics inside of the cockpit. Any mechanic working on civilian aircraft needs to be certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). A few mechanics have been able to bypass the educational training and receive on-the-job training, but all of the learning needs to be documented by a supervisor and reported to the FAA.
