Medical Laboratory Technologies

Medical technicians and technologists who work in a laboratory setting usually are individuals with excellent aptitude for math and science. They operate lab equipment and computers for research and diagnostic purposes. Read on to see if this career field is right for you.

Inside Medical Laboratory Technologies

Adults seeking an education in medical and health professions may choose to enter the field of medical laboratory technologies. Medical laboratory technologists test, detect, and treat diseases and illness. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that although hospitals are expected to continue to be the main employers of clinical laboratory workers, employment is expected to grow faster in other areas (www.bls.gov). These areas include diagnostic and medical laboratories, physicians' offices and ambulatory health care services including blood and organ banks.

Work Conditions

Because of advances in technology, laboratory technologists' jobs are becoming more focused on computers and data-entry rather than operating hands-on equipment. Since lab techs work around hazardous and infectious materials, individuals must follow a variety of safety protocols. Laboratory technologists' hours vary based on where they work, but they are often required to work nights and weekends.
