Advanced General Dentistry Programs

Advanced general dentistry programs can sharpen and expand dental residents' core dental competencies. Working in clinics and hospitals, residents treat patients with a range of needs and arm themselves with greater depth of experience. To learn more about education and career options for advanced general dentists, read on.

Inside Advanced General Dentistry

Before earning an advanced dental degree, aspiring dentists must complete undergraduate coursework and attend dental school. Although not usually state mandated, many dentists pursue education past a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) in order to improve their physical skills and range of services. Postdoctoral general dental education falls into one of two program categories: General Practice Residency (GPR) or Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD). Both are residency programs that span 1-2 years and allow residents to see more patients than through dental school alone.

Education Information

AEGD residents primarily work in clinical settings, caring for a range of patients and broadening their foundation in areas like treatment planning and procedures. Students can specialize within an AEGD program in areas such as dental anesthesiology, orofacial pain, dental public health, endodontics or oral medicine. GPR residents mainly treat hospitalized patients, learning the intricacies of medical management. Their clinical rotations typically include caring for walk-in, emergency room and surgical dental patients, as well as attending lectures and dental seminars. Graduates typically receive certificates upon program completion. Check out the following articles to learn more about possible education paths.
