Endodontics

Endodontics is a dental specialization that concentrates on treating the pulpy center of teeth to save teeth and ease pain, like using root canal therapy to treat diseased or damaged teeth. Read on to learn more about the field of endodontics.

Inside Endodontics

When the pulp of a tooth, the soft inside portion of a tooth that holds the tooth's nerves and supplies nutrients, gets injured or diseased, the tooth can die. To treat this, an endodontist cleans the canal in the root and seals it for protection; this is known as a root canal procedure.

Education Information

Dentists must hold a dental degree, such as a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD), from an accredited school before pursuing the specialty of endodontics. Endodontics training programs typically last about two years after the completion of dental school. Endodontics programs award certificates that qualify dentists to practice as endodontists. Some schools combine an endodontics certificate program with a master's in oral and craniofacial sciences, which can take up to 36 months to complete. Here are a few links to articles offering more details about relevant training programs.
