Periodontics

Periodontics, which deals with treating the gums and supporting structures of the mouth, is just one of several specialties within the field of dentistry. Read on to learn more about education requirements and employment options.

Inside Periodontics

Periodontists are dentists who specialize in diagnosing and treating gum disease as well as complications with bones that support the teeth. On a day-to-day basis, periodontists might perform corrective surgery to treat bone and gum disease, take X-rays and administer antibiotics or other medication. They could also engage in preventative care, including helping patients learn effective practices to help reduce the risk of gum disease.

Education Information

Educational programs in periodontology involve the study of the biological sciences and clinical procedures, including examination, restoration, extraction, periodontal surgery and treatment for unhealthy gums. The completion of a 3-year master's degree or a 36-month graduate certificate program in periodontics is required before students can become licensed periodontists.
