Electrocardiograph Tech. - ECG, EKG

Electrocardiograph technicians perform non-invasive procedures to monitor the electrical activity of patients' hearts. Along with academic training, techs need the compassion necessary to serve anxious patients. Read on to learn about education and career options in this in-demand field.

Inside Electrocardiograph Technology

An electrocardiograph (EKG or ECG) technician administers diagnostic heart tests to pre-surgery patients or to patients who may have heart problems. The tests help detect, diagnose and monitor medical conditions related to the heart, such as arrhythmias, pericarditis and angina. The most common test is an EKG, which monitors the heart's electrical activity, but further training allows for more complicated testing and procedures to be conducted.

Education Information

Cardiovascular technologists are typically required to have an associate degree for an entry-level job. However, on-the-job training and professional certificates are also available, especially for EKG technicians. Such on-the-job training is generally completed in four to six weeks. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Professionals accredits education and training programs for cardiovascular technicians (www.bls.gov).
