Industrial radiologic technology, or radiography, is a branch of materials science. It's one of six primary methods used in non-destructive testing (NDT) to examine an object for material integrity and reliability in a manner that won't harm it for future use. Industrial radiologic technology uses penetrating radiation with several objectives in mind, some of which are to check for cracks, variations in density and chemistry, foreign objects, misalignment, missing parts and service degradation.

Education Information

Industrial radiologic technology or non-destructive testing programs are often offered through associate degree programs, though undergraduate certificate and diploma programs can also be found. In addition to radiography, students learn the five other methods of non-destructive testing, which are eddy current, magnetic particle, liquid penetrant, visual and ultrasonics. Mathematics, physics, computers, drafting, technical report writing and manufacturing processes are additional areas of instruction.
