Pre-Pharmacy

Pre-pharmacy is an undergraduate program that sets students on the path to earning a Doctor of Pharmacy degree by providing a solid base in science and mathematics. Read on to learn if pursuing pre-pharmacy is right for you.

Inside Pre-Pharmacy Studies

In order to pursue a career as a pharmacist, an individual must earn a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. While some schools offer standalone Pharm.D. programs, many require students to complete a preparatory program in pre-pharmacy. Pre-pharmacy programs are designed to provide students with core math and science skills needed to apply for a Pharm.D. program.

Education Information

Pre-pharmacy studies is often a 2-year set of courses required for entry into a Pharm.D. program. Students typically begin these courses as soon as they are admitted to the college, then apply to the doctorate program their sophomore or junior year. Completing a pre-pharmacy degree does not guarantee entrance to a Pharm.D. program, even if the program is linked through the same school. Required courses include anatomy and physiology, organic chemistry, physics and microbiology.
