Optometric and Ophthalmic Services

Optometric and ophthalmic service providers diagnose and treat vision disorders and eye diseases. Optometrists, ophthalmologists and their assistants usually work in private practice or at hospitals and clinics. Read on to explore academic and career options in this field.

Inside Optometric and Ophthalmic Services

Both optometry and ophthalmology are concerned with the health of the human visual system. Optometry focuses on assessing visual health and correcting vision problems with lenses, such as eyeglasses or contact lenses. Ophthalmology deals with diagnosing and curing eye diseases through surgery and medication.

Ophthalmic assistants help ophthalmologists by conducting eye tests, measuring patients' vision and showing people how to use contact lenses. Optometric assistants conduct many of the same tasks, working with optometrists. Ophthalmic laboratory technicians make eyeglasses, contact lenses and other optical goods.
