Art Therapist

Artistic people who have a deep interest in helping others are ideal for the art therapy field. Education in art therapy typically involves undergraduate and graduate-level training in both art and mental health fields.

Inside Art Therapy

Art therapy is a concentration of recreation therapy, which is a field of therapy that uses recreational activities to diagnose and alleviate mental and physical disabilities. Art therapists use art to help patients develop self-esteem, solve personal problems and generally improve their mental or emotional health. People who receive services from art therapists create art in order to express themselves and cope with life's problems. Patients who can benefit from art therapy include those grappling with depression and those who have suffered from abuse and trauma.

Education Information

At the undergraduate level, art therapy students can major in art, art education, psychology or art therapy. A background in both art and mental health study is necessary for admission to a graduate program in art therapy. Master's degrees are common graduate-level art therapy degrees. In some cases, it is possible for students working on a doctoral degree in psychology to incorporate art therapy into their curriculum in order to prepare for an art therapy career.
