Most schools combine the toxicology and pharmacology fields into one program. Toxicology refers to the study of environmental and food hazards; in this case, the particular hazards affecting animals both domestic and wild. Veterinary pharmacology is the development of medicines and antidotes to treat animals affected by these various problems.

Education Information

Before entering these degree programs, most applicants will have completed a 4-year Doctor in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an institution accredited by the American Veterinary Medicine Association. Upon completion of the DVM, many graduates go on to further study in a number of different concentrations. Veterinary toxicology and pharmacology is one of these concentrations and generally requires participation in a 4- or 5-year graduate degree and residency program.
