Inside Family Psychology

Family psychologists treat families and individuals, helping to solve and prevent problems within the family unit. This area of psychology studies the family as a system, analyzing behaviors, communication patterns and emotional responses among family members. Family psychologists provide counseling on marriage and divorce, abuse, bereavement, parenting and adoption.

Education Information

A doctoral degree program is the most common option in family psychology. However, within psychology bachelor's and master's degree programs, some schools may offer specializations in family psychology. Common graduate-level courses may cover child development, marriage and family communications, human development over a lifespan, therapy techniques and counseling skills. Students typically have to complete clinical work throughout the program.
