About the Adler School of Professional Psychology

The Adler School of Professional Psychology was established in 1952 and is the oldest independent psychology school in North America. This four-year, private nonprofit graduate institution offers graduate professional degree programs and one doctoral program.

In addition to its main campus in Chicago, IL, Adler also has a campus in Vancouver, British Columbia, as well as an online program. Focused on combining hands-on experience with theory, science and practice, the college places a great deal of importance on preparing students to be socially responsible, community involved and advocates of social justice.

Accredited by the American Psychological Association and the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the Adler School offers a doctorate in clinical psychology, along with master's and certificate programs. Master's degree programs are offered in areas that include counseling psychology, organizational psychology, marriage/family counseling, art therapy, public policy and policy psychology.

In 2012, the Adler School added its first 100% online program, a Master of Arts in Criminology. Students enrolled in any of the master's programs are required to complete a 150-hour Community Service Practicum (CSP) within their first year.

Adler has a rolling admission process throughout the year for admittance to any term. However, the priority deadline for the doctoral program is February 15th, as of 2012.

Prospective students must fill out Adler's application for admission, as well as submit an autobiographical essay, application fee ($50), official transcripts, three letters of recommendation and a resume.

The Adler School requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited college for all respective areas of study and degree programs. Specific prerequisites, courses and additional admissions criteria for each degree program varies. In 2011, Adler had a significantly higher enrollment in female students (78%) than male students (22%), and 67% of the student population attended full-time.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The cost for attending Adler's Chicago campus is $1,040 per credit hour for the master's degree programs and $1,160 per credit hour for the doctoral program. Additional fees and tuition include those for a dissertation, internships, student services and liability insurance. Tuition and fees for the Vancouver campus and online students may vary.

As a graduate institution, the Adler School offers several financial aid options to students. Federal loan options are available to students who maintain a satisfactory academic standing and have at least half-time enrollment. Scholarships, assistantships and work-study programs are among the other options available.
