About East Mississippi Community College
East Mississippi Community College (EMCC) is a 2-year, public institution with a main campus located in Scooba, MS. The college operates a satellite campus in Mayhew, MS, known as the Golden Triangle Campus, as well as extension centers in 4 other nearby cities. The Scooba campus offers on-campus housing that can accommodate 600 students. In 2011, nearly 5,000 students were enrolled at the college, 56% of which were on a full-time basis.
East Mississippi Community College awards 3 types of degree titles to students: Associate of Arts (A.A.), Associate of Applied Science (AAS) and vocational certificates. A.A. programs are geared towards students who are planning to transfer to a 4-year institution upon program completion. EMCC works with Mississippi 4-year institutions to ensure that transfer-oriented courses fulfill requirements at these schools. There are 3 academic divisions for these programs: humanities and fine arts, mathematics and science, and social science and business.
AAS and certificate options are available in 25 professional fields covering business, nursing, welding, carpentry and computer networking, among others. Typically, the certificate option allows students to receive training to enter the job field in less than a year of study. The AAS option provides a broader focus and typically takes 2 years to complete.
East Mississippi Community College has an open admissions policy. To apply for admission, students must submit an application to the admissions office, as well as an official high school or GED transcript and ACT test scores. If a student has not taken the ACT, he or she can sit for COMPASS testing, and these scores can be used for placement instead of ACT scores. Students interested in career programs must apply to their program of choice and meet the requirements specific to that program. There is no application deadline, but students must typically enroll in classes a few days before the start date.
Tuition & Financial Aid
Tuition at East Mississippi Community College varies based on a student's residency. Full-time, Mississippi residents were charged $1,025 per semester for the 2012-2013 school year. Full-time, non-resident students paid $2,050 per semester for the same year. Housing at the Scooba campus costs $900 per semester. Meal plans for students living on campus range from $775-$975 per semester, and meal plans for commuters cost about $300 per semester. There are a variety of fees students must pay, depending on their program and coursework, which are not reflected in the tuition figures.
Financial aid is available to students, with 80% of first-time, full-time students receiving some type of aid in 2011. Institutional scholarships are available to students enrolling for the fall semester. Requirements, award amount and eligibility vary depending on the scholarship. Only Mississippi residents are eligible for institutional aid.
