About Fordham University

Fordham University was founded in 1841. This private Catholic university, also known as the Jesuit University of New York, offers a Master of Social Work (MSW) program that is fully online. It is part of their Graduate School of Social Service (GSS), which is ranked #25 on U.S. News and World Report's list of social work graduate schools. All classroom teaching for this master's degree is done online and field internships can be carried out wherever the student is living, meaning that no relocation is necessary. The program offers full-time, part-time, and accelerated options. It focuses on four primary areas of competency, including Organizations and Community, Individuals and Family, Policy Practice and Advocacy, and Evaluation.

The mission of the school is to educate students holistically in order to develop individuals who contribute positively to society through the promotion of justice, excellence, and caring for others. In line with its Jesuit roots, the university's mission is based on service and the importance of developing each individual in order to transform their actions.

Why Fordham University

Holistic Education

Beyond the factual knowledge and technical expertise that can be gained from the MSW degree offered at Fordham, the faculty and leadership is also committed to providing a holistic education. This results in a focus on character, curiosity, hard work, service, and other disciplines that are designed to develop the whole person, not only the mind.

Commitment to Diversity

Although Fordham is a school based on a particular religion and school of thought, it values diverse perspectives and experiences within their student body and faculty. This commitment is demonstrated through a proactive approach that includes the designation of a Chief Diversity Officer and a Task Force on Diversity.

Online Options

Along with an on-campus and hybrid version of the program, the MSW at Fordham University offers a fully-online program. This allows those already in a career and/or living in a different location the opportunity to continue their education without having to pause the rest of their life. It also means that students can continue investing in their local community while enhancing their skills and capacity.

Along with the fact that the MSW is offered online, there are other areas of flexibility for students who are enrolled in this program. For example, each student is able to choose a focus that aligns with their career aspirations and goals. This means that, with the assistance of an academic adviser, each student has the opportunity to tailor their curriculum to what they know they need to learn.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

In order to be accepted into Fordham University's Master of Social Work program, a bachelor's degree from a relevant university is required. Additionally, a Bachelor's of Social Work can help students qualify for advanced standing in the MSW program. Applicants to Fordham University should have a high school diploma or the equivalent; some programs may have additional admissions requirements.
