About Kirkwood Community College

Kirkwood Community College (KCC) is located on a 680-acre campus in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The college was founded in 1966 and is currently accredited by the Higher Learning Commission NCA. There are satellite learning centers in Marion, Iowa City, Belle Plaine, Monticello, Tipton, Vinton, Washington and Williamsburg. Notable buildings include the Healthcare Simulation Center and the Iowa Equestrian Center.


There are over 125 programs of study at KCC. Students have the opportunity to attain an associate's degree, certificate or diploma. The most popular areas of study among associate's degree recipients in 2010-2011 were liberal arts, health and business. KCC gives students the opportunity to take hybrid and online courses. The liberal arts, management and water environmental technology associate's degree programs are all available online.

Students can participate in the study-abroad program, which has semester opportunities in Canada, Australia, Brazil and Singapore.


Kirkwood Community College has an open admissions policy and offers a free application process. Applicants who are interested in enrolling at the college have to complete an application, create an e-mail account and complete placement exams or turn in ACT scores. Some programs require students to attend a conference prior to enrolling. Before incoming students can register for classes, they must meet with an advisor. Specific programs, such as the allied health ones, may have additional admission requirements.

Full-time students made up 52% of total enrollment in fall 2011. In 2011, 95% of all students attending KCC were from Iowa.

Tuition & Financial Aid

Tuition for the 2012-2013 school year at Kirkwood Community College was $133 per credit hour for in-state residents and $158 per credit hour for non-residents. The estimated cost for books and supplies for the year in 2011-2012 was $1,410.

The FACTS tuition plan is an option for students who want to pay the tuition in installments during the semester. This plan costs $25 per semester. KCC has scholarships available, and students can apply anytime from October 1 to March 31 each year.
