About Montclair State University

Montclair State University is located in Montclair, New Jersey, a suburb just outside of New York City. Montclair was the first New Jersey state college to offer master's degrees, and was the first state college to offer a doctoral program. Forbes named Montclair 'New Jersey's best public university' in 2009, and the U.S. Education Trust has recognized the university as a leader in the increase of minority student graduate rates.


Montclair has four colleges (arts, education and human services, humanities and social science, science and mathematics) and two schools (business and graduate) that offer undergraduate and graduate degree programs as well as certificate programs. The university has 54 undergraduate majors and 134 graduate programs.

The average class size is 22-23, and the campus has a theater, two galleries, and a television center. The university offers M.A. degrees in child advocacy and policy and educational leadership online, as well as some individual online courses. There is also an honors program with special housing, priority registration, and personalized academic advising, and opportunities to study abroad through the global education center.


The university has an early action deadline of November 15 with a notification date of December 15, as well as a traditional deadline of December 15 with a notification date of February 1. Applications are still accepted through March 1, with decisions for those applications occurring on a rolling basis.

Applicants must provide a completed application, along with the application fee, high school transcripts, SAT/ACT scores, a personal statement, and a letter of recommendation from a guidance counselor. Further letters of recommendation are not required, but students may submit them if they wish. Applicants to programs at the College of Arts must also undergo an audition, portfolio review, or interview. Students with AP or CLEP scores can send those scores to the university to receive credit for them.

The tuition for the 2012 school year was $11,057 per year for New Jersey residents and $20,135 per year for non-residents. The estimated room and board for 2012 was $13,355. The university offers loans, scholarships, grants, and work study.
