About Northern Illinois University
Northern Illinois University is an accredited public school with a main campus in DeKalb, IL. For students who are seeking more flexibility in their studies, NIU Online offers nearly 30 online undergraduate and graduate programs in, among other areas, nursing, health sciences, marketing, public health, business management, instructional technology, and engineering management. Most of these programs can be taken 100% online.
Undergraduate students can choose from eight online programs: seven bachelor's degree programs or an undergraduate certificate program in geographic information systems. Bachelor of Science degrees can be obtained in political science, marketing, nursing for RNs, technology (with an emphasis in applied manufacturing technology), health sciences, and applied management. There is also a Bachelor of General Studies online program that is designed to provide a general liberal arts education. Master's degrees and graduate certificates can be obtained in a wide variety of areas, including art education, digital marketing, data analytics, industrial management, nursing, systems engineering, and trauma-informed counseling. Although the M.S. in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice programs are fully online, clinicals are conducted in healthcare settings. The online Doctor of Education in Adult and Higher Education with an emphasis in Community College Leadership also requires a one-week face-to-face component during each summer of the three-year program.
'I've found that NIU has a community with a place for everyone if you seek it out. I have met some of my best friends on this campus. NIU definitely is a university full of opportunities, no matter what interests you have.'
-Marilyn Chakkalamuri, Northern Illinois University student
'I learned about NIU at a college fair. The representative seemed so positive, passionate and excited about all the things NIU has to offer. I also saw that the College of Education was one of the top schools in the nation for online master's degrees in education and one of the top undergraduate schools for education in Illinois.'
- Ashley Grazutis, current Northern Illinois University student
Why Northern Illinois University?
Fully Online Studies
Students can adhere to their current schedules and meet prior commitments while completing their studies. Technology keeps students in touch with each other through online chats, blogs, and group activities, while also while allowing them to complete their coursework on their own time.
Several NIU programs have earned accreditation by top accrediting bodies, such as ABET and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP, formerly NCATE). The university's College of Business has bachelor's and master's degree programs accredited by AACSB International, and is part of only four percent of business schools in the world to hold accreditation at all levels.
Undergraduate tuition rates at NIU have not changed in the past five years; what's more, full-time students only pay for only 12 credits each semester, even if they enroll in more.
More than 80 percent of students at NIU receive some form of financial aid. The Financial Aid & Scholarship Office helps students in the financial aid process as they seek aid through loans, grants, or scholarships.
