About Samford University

Samford University is a private, Southern Baptist university located in Birmingham, Alabama. Established in 1841, Samford is the 87th oldest university in the United States and Alabama's largest private university. U.S. News & World Report's Best Colleges 2013 ranked Samford University the number 4 regional university in the South.

Academics

Samford University is made up of 8 schools: the School of the Arts, Howard College of Arts and Sciences, Brock School of Business, Beeson Divinity School, Orlean Bullard Beeson School of Education and Professional Studies, Cumberland School of Law, Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing, and McWhorter School of Pharmacy. Samford University offers about 110 majors in such areas as education, engineering, theology, psychology, and ethnic studies. Students can also find a variety of graduate programs.

Study abroad programs are available through the Samford University Office of International Studies. The school's 4-1-4 calendar system includes a fall and spring semester and an optional winter term. Students can also take courses in the summer.

Admissions

Samford University uses a rolling admissions schedule, and students can apply using the Common Application or the school's online application. Application requirements include a $40 fee, an essay of at least 250 words, SAT or ACT scores, official transcripts, and an academic letter of recommendation. In 2011, Samford University had approximately 2,600 applicants, of whom 83% were admitted and 32% enrolled in classes. Also that year, Samford had a total student body of 4,758, including 2,950 undergraduates; 64% of students were female, and 33% were from Alabama.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Samford University offers several merit-based scholarships, as well as scholarships for children of Baptist clergy and children of alumni.
