About San Jose State University

Originally founded in 1857 as the Minns' Evening Normal School, San Jose State University (SJSU) is the oldest institution of higher learning on the West Coast today. The university's campus is located on 154-acres in downtown San Jose, about halfway between San Francisco and the Monterey/Carmel area.

U.S. News & World Report ranked San Jose State University #10 among West's top public universities offering bachelor's and master's degrees in 2012 and has listed SJSU in the top 15 master's-level public universities in the West as well. SJSU serves around 30,000 students annually and is the top supplier of technical and business-related graduates to Silicon Valley area organizations.


San Jose State University offers over 134 bachelor's and master's degrees programs via 7 colleges. Students may participate in special learning opportunities that include: ROTC (Army, Air Force), teacher certification, distance learning opportunities, and study abroad programs.

San Jose State University evaluates prospective student's class ranking and grade point average during the admissions granting process. A college-preparatory program is required as well and the university recommends that applicants take the SAT or ACT. The application fee is $55 and may be submitted online.
