About South Central College

South Central College, also referred to as SCC, is a 2-year, technical and community college that was founded in 1946. SCC's main campus is located in the town of North Mankato, MN, about an hour and a half southwest of Minneapolis. An additional campus is available an hour east of the main campus in Faribault, MN, which is an hour south of Minneapolis.


SCC offers over 50 associate's degree, diploma and certificate programs across 7 different career field categories: liberal arts and sciences; arts, communications and information systems; engineering, manufacturing and technology; health science technology; human services; business, management and administration; and agriculture, food and natural resources. The most popular associate's degree programs in 2010-2011 were liberal arts and registered nursing; other popular programs included accounting, computer systems networking, marketing, human services and child development.

South Central College offers online associate's degree programs in administration, social service and legal administration. Its online certificate programs are in the areas of programming, child care administration, child development, administration, social service, client relations and legal administration.


In order to apply to SCC, students must submit an application online or by mail, a $20 application fee, an official high school transcript or GED scores and transcripts from any colleges previously attended. Students are admitted to a specific program and must complete placement tests upon admission. SCC has an open admissions policy; students are admitted to their program as long as space is available. Applications are due by January 3rd for spring 2013, by June 3rd for the 2013 summer session and by August 6th for fall 2013.

Tuition & Financial Aid

Tuition and fees during the 2012-2013 academic year are $178.51 per credit for traditional courses and $211.01 per credit for online courses. Higher tuition rates apply for some courses. NCES estimated that the cost of full-time tuition for the 2011-2012 academic year was $5,169. The total estimated expenses per student were $17,420. Students living off-campus with family had estimated total expenses of $10,420.

SCC offers a number of scholarships with various criteria such as need, merit and talent. Once per year, the Presidential Scholarship grants full-tuition coverage to a student with a high school GPA of at least 3.75 who has excelled in leadership and community endeavors. In 2010-2011, 10% of incoming, full-time students were granted aid directly from the college; the average award amount was $625.
