About Southeast Technical Institute

Located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Southeast Technical Institute (STI) is a 2-year institution, providing associate's degrees and certificates. The campus houses 6 buildings, including the Ed Wood Center, the Mickelson Education Center, the Terrence Sullivan Health and Science Center, the Technology Center, Nicolay-Hummel and Andera residence halls, and the Scarbrough Child Care Center. The Hovland Learning Center, located inside the Mickelson Education Center, provides adult education skill development classes, ESL courses, and GED preparation classes. STI has 16 student organizations, including student government. The Scarbrough Childcare Center cares for children ranging from 4 weeks to 10 years old, and can accommodate up to 60 children. STI is accredited by multiple accrediting agencies.


STI has a required laptop program and once enrolled, new students must purchase a laptop from STI. Students who take less than six credit hours are exempt from the program. Additionally, students enrolled in electroneurodiagnostic technology, nuclear medicine, welding, and phlebotomy programs are required to have a laptop or tablet, but do not need to purchase a device from STI.

The maximum class size at STI is 33 students and STI has a 22 to 1 student to faculty ratio. The Training Solutions Institute provides certificate programs in construction, floral design, AutoCAD, publication design, welding, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Certified Nurse's Assistant (CNA), online healthcare, business, education, and paralegal services.

STI offers 48 associate's degree programs in subjects ranging from business, technology, engineering, health sciences, horticulture, HVAC, automotive technology, education, and law enforcement. STI has multiple agreements with universities for students wishing to transfer to a bachelor's program upon completion of an associate's degree program. Students who earn the Associate in Applied Science Early Childhood Specialist degree at STI may transfer to the University of Sioux Falls and earn a Bachelor's of Science in Elementary Education or Bachelor's of Science in Early Childhood Program Management. Furthermore, STI offers flexible degree options in business, education, and nursing through evening and online programs.


STI has an open admissions policy and accepts students who have achieved a high school diploma or GED, and are at least 16 years old. Students may apply online or by mail. Students are encouraged to research specific degree options as some programs have additional admission requirements. Additionally, a $75 non-refundable fee is charged upon acceptance to STI. High School AP classes are transferable as long as students achieved a minimum GPA of 3.0. Of the 2,507 students enrolled in the fall of 2011, 76% were full-time, 51% were female, 89% were Caucasian, and 35% were at least 25 years old.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The estimated cost of attending STI full-time is approximately $16,264 per year. This cost includes tuition, room and board, books, and living expenses. The charge for the STI required laptop is included in the first semester tuition costs. Additionally, online courses are $50 per credit hour. Financial aid is available through various scholarships, grants, and work study programs.
