Distance Education Psychology Courses with Career Summaries

Distance education psychology courses are commonly available through undergraduate and graduate degree programs. These courses allow students to explore concepts and theories in a wide variety of subjects, such as developmental, forensic and social psychology, and they also prepare students to be able to conduct research of their own.

Online Psychology Courses

The following psychology classes are often offered online.

  • Developmental Psychology: Students learn about the psychological aspects of human development. Specific concepts include social, emotional and intellectual attributes of children, teenagers and adults.
  • Child Psychopathology: This course is an offshoot of developmental psychology with specific concentration on children's issues. Specific treatment plans are discussed for conduct disorders, developmental syndromes and drug abuse.
  • Social Psychology: This course is used in both general psychology and forensic psychology distance education programs. Topics include stereotyping, intolerance, group behavior and individual personality.
  • Family and Marriage: Issues addressed include gender roles, sexual relationships, commitment, communication and conflict resolution. Other topics include pregnancy, childbirth and parenthood.
  • Organizational Psychology: This course is geared toward those enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Psychology degree program, which tends to focus on the psychology of business entities. Students learn the psychology behind motivation techniques, candidate selection and employee training.
  • Theories of Personality: Students learn about theories and research in human personality through both contemporary and classical perspectives. Other topics include cultural diversity and special populations, as well as historical studies by famous psychologists such as Sigmund Freud.
  • Biopsychology: This online course takes a look at how the brain affects human thoughts, emotions and actions. Students examine aspects of the nervous system, psychopharmacology, brain dysfunctions, genetics and neuroplasticity, among other topics.
  • Cognitive Processes: This online course includes discussions on the processes involved in memory, learning, language and decision making. The application of cognitive psychology and its concepts to real life situations will also be covered.

Program Information

Students interested in taking online courses in psychology follow the same curriculum and earn the same degrees as their on-campus counterparts. Consequently, distance education master's degree seekers typically complete a capstone project or thesis, and undergraduate students pursue cooperative education experiences. Online psychology degree programs are available at the associate's, bachelor's and master's levels.

Programs such as Blackboard provide students with tools for sending e-mails, participating in debate forums, submitting assignments and contacting professors. In addition, Web-based tools allow for broadcasting of live video and audio. While many assignments can be submitted virtually, students may be required to secure a proctor for exams.

Most work is completed asynchronously; however, students may participate in group projects, which would require the use of Blackboard's chat feature to interact in live time. Lab work may be another requirement, and forums such as the Online Psychology Laboratory, www.opl.apa.org allow students to participate in interactive lab studies and illustrations.

Aspiring psychology students can find a wide range of coursework available through online learning. Course topics running the gamut from cognitive and child psychology to biopsychology and theories of personality can help you explore your interest in the field.
