Architecture schools offer study in a variety of architectural fields via distance learning, though most don't qualify graduates for licensure as an architect. Fully accredited online programs in architecture are widely available at the bachelor's, master's, and graduate certificate levels. Hybrid programs are also available. Common majors include architectural studies, architectural engineering technology, architecture and interior design, enterprise architecture, and architecture and sustainability. However, very few schools offer an accredited professional degree program (which is required for state licensure) online.
Non-licensure architecture programs can serve as pre-professional degree programs or teach those in architectural fields new skills and trends in the field. The following schools offer several types of online architecture programs:
Texas Tech University - Lubbock, TX
A comprehensive research school, Texas Tech University (TTU) boasts smaller class sizes and more personalized interaction with teachers. TTU's six off-campus locations and over 30 online programs provide students with high-quality education and the convenience of distance learning courses that may be supplemented with local face-to-face instruction.
Bachelor's Degree Program
Texas Tech's distance learning architecture program utilizes a combination of the Internet, interactive video conferencing and in-person instruction to deliver its Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree program. TTU's distance learning architecture program requires students to complete lower-level coursework at El Paso Community College or other institutions prior to acceptance. A Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree is a pre-professional degree and prepares students to work in the building industry and architecture, though it does not meet requirements for state licensure to work as an architect.
In the final two years of the program, TTU students can expect to study the following subjects:
- Architectural design
- Site planning
- Digital design
- Architectural construction
- Historic preservation
- Building information technology
- Architectural environmental systems
Lawrence Technological University - Southfield, MI
Ranked in the top third of the Standard & Poor's list of colleges that provide the leaders of the U.S.'s top companies, Lawrence Technological University (LTU) strives to accommodate both traditional and working students. LTU developed LTU Online to provide more flexible learning opportunities and now offers over 10 programs, including two distance learning architecture programs.
Master of Architecture Professional Program
Other than the Critical Practice Studio, LTU's Master of Architecture distance learning program may be completed entirely online through the school's Architecture and Design department. The distance learning architecture program requires 36 credit hours and offers electives and a dual MBA program for students who wish to pursue additional credentials. The Critical Practice Studio may be completed on campus during a 10-week semester or over four weekends and a field trip.
Graduate students take courses in design theory, research and ecological issues in addition to choosing elective classes such as the following:
- Architectural law
- Construction management
- Project management
- Quality control
- Information systems
This program, which is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board, can be completed in about 15 months and is designed for working professionals. Students interested in this program must have a bachelor's degree in architecture, a resume and professional portfolio in order to be eligible for admission.
Graduate Certificate Program
Intended for working professionals and students already enrolled in LTU's architecture graduate program, the certificate in architecture management program prepares students to head architecture firms and lead architecture projects. This online architecture program is offered through LTU's College of Architecture and Design, College of Management and LTU Online.
- Architecture law
- Organizational change
- Construction management
University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, WI
The University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee (UWM) offers online and blended programs, including a minor in architecture. Students taking UWM's online courses participate in group projects, work independently and interact with a teacher through an online classroom. UWM's School of Architecture and Urban Planning teaches the science and art of architecture, preparing students to become creative, innovative architects and designers.
UWM's minor in architecture distance learning program lends itself to students who are pursuing another major at UWM, as well as working professionals or other learners who meet program qualifications. Students participate in class discussions, prepare analysis papers and engage in design projects in an online classroom.
- Introductory architecture
- Architectural theory and composition
- Architecture and environment response
Students will find both fully online and blended programs available in fields related to architecture, such as architectural studies and enterprise architecture, at the undergraduate and graduate levels. However, professional degree programs that prepare students to become licensed architects are very rarely offered online.
