Health science degree programs can be found in a number of universities across the country. In addition to traditional programs, fully online options are available for students who lack the time or resources to attend on-campus courses. These programs are available at a number of levels, from the prestigious Master of Public Health (MPH) to certificates. Specifically the degree levels that are offered are a bachelor's, master's, and a certificate program.

University of South Dakota

For undergraduate students, the University of South Dakota offers a bachelor of science in health science program that can be completed entirely online. The program is an excellent option for students who lack experience, as admissions requirements are not as stringent as master's programs.

Information and Requirements

Students generally need only a high school diploma, although students with prior coursework (such as an associate's degree) can pursue special tracks. In total, the school offers six pathways for students, with tracks including pre-professional studies, health care studies, health care advancement studies, and clinical informatics.

University of North Carolina

Master of Public Health (MPH) and certificate programs are offered by the University of North Carolina on a distance learning basis through the Gillings School of Global Public Health. Certificates are 12-15-credit hour programs that can be completed by students who never visit the campus. The master's program is offered mostly online, though some on-campus sessions are required.

Information and Requirements

Requirements include a bachelor's degree, demonstrated math and writing ability and either medical or nursing training or significant, health-related work experience. Certificate credits may be transferable to the school's MPH programs.

The Certificate in Field Epidemiology program covers topics including infectious disease, outbreaks, disease investigation and surveillance and methods of field epidemiology. There is also a Certificate in Core Public Health Concepts, offering some of the same content found within the MPH program. Applications are accepted year-round, but most students begin in the fall.

The MPH is a 42-credit program that can be completed in 2-3 years, but students have up to five years to finish. Most work is done online, but students must attend two week-long sessions at UNC's Chapel Hill campus. Students are required to complete a practicum and research paper.

University of Louisville

The university's School of Nursing online program is designed for those with nursing degrees or diplomas who wish to advance to leadership roles. All work is completed online except for a practicum in community health, which can be completed in the student's hometown. Degrees and transcripts are identical to those given to traditional students.

Applicants must have an unrestricted RN license and an undergraduate GPA of 2.5 or above. Those accepted may begin in the spring or fall.
