Essential Information

Drafting and design degree programs provide technical training for design-oriented careers in manufacturing, engineering, architecture, and construction. A few schools in Texas offer related bachelor's degrees, but most drafting and design programs culminate in associate's degrees or certificates, the typical entry-level credentials for drafters. Some programs may have specializations within them for students to choose from. Coursework in these programs teaches students to produce technical drawings through the use of computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) software. In addition, students may have the opportunity to gain practical experience through an internship. The nine largest Texas colleges offering drafting and design degree programs are listed below.


Austin Community College District

The architectural and engineering computer-aided design program at Austin Community College District in Austin offers many specializations for degrees and certificates. Students may choose to earn an Associate of Applied Science with an architectural, civil, electronic graphics, mechanical, or interdisciplinary specialization. The architectural specialization, for example, prepares graduates for entry-level employment in industries such as architecture, engineering, construction, or building. Certificate programs are available in areas such as computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing, civil CAD, and CAD management.

Central Texas College

Central Texas College is a 2-year school located in Killeen, Texas. Students may choose to pursue either a Certificate of Completion or an Associate of Applied Science in Computer-Aided Drafting and Design. Both tracks include courses such as technical drafting, technical illustration, and basic computer-aided drafting. The curriculum focuses on developing professional competencies.

Collin County Community College District

At Collin County Community College, or Collin College, in McKinney, both certificate and degree programs in computer-aided drafting and design prepare students with hands-on application of classroom learning. Students of all programs complete courses such as technical drafting and basic computer-aided drafting. Associate's degree students must also complete general education courses.

El Paso Community College

Located in El Paso, El Paso Community College has programs available to prepare students for design drafting careers. The Associate of Applied Science program in Computer-Aided Design allows students to train under the supervision of a senior designer or engineer. A certificate program is also available in CAD operator and detailer.

Houston Community College

The Houston Community College (HCC) system has six campuses spread throughout Houston, Texas, and serves more than 70,000 students each semester. Students may work toward a certificate in computer-aided drafting or an associate's degree in drafting and design engineering technology. They may also choose a specialization, including mechanical design, process piping design, or architectural drafting.

Sam Houston State University

Sam Houston State University in Huntsville offers an emphasis in design and technology in its Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre program. This emphasis allows students to practice using CAD software for theatrical applications. Students will be trained in all aspects of theater design, including stage scenery, stage lighting, and theater technology.

San Jacinto Community College

A 2-year school, San Jacinto Community College has two campuses in Houston and one in Pasadena, as well as an online school. Students may pursue a certificate or an associate's degree in engineering design graphics. Concentrations for these programs include civil drafting, mechanical, industrial, or technical animator/modeler.

South Texas College

South Texas College in McAllen is a 4-year school, primarily offering associate's degrees. The certificate and associate's degree programs in architectural and engineering design technology require students to specialize in architectural drafting, civil drafting, digital imaging, or geographic information systems. To earn an associate's degree, students must complete 320 hours of external learning.

Tarrant County College District

Tarrant Community College (TCC) has five major campuses in and around Fort Worth, with the drafting and design program offered at its South Campus. Over 50,000 students enroll in the school's associate's degree and technical programs each year. Drafting and design degree emphases include building, civil, or manufacturing technology. TCC also offers certificate programs in building, civil, manufacturing, and CNC machinist technology.
