Felician University

Felician University, founded in 1942, is the only Franciscan college in the state of New Jersey. Located in the city of Lodi, Felician University enrolls nearly 2,000 students a year. The school offers early childhood education training through the School of Education.

Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education (K-6) and Early Childhood (P-3)

This is a 4-year program that is approved by the state of New Jersey. Students interested in early childhood education can earn an early childhood education endorsement along with their bachelor's degree in elementary education. This endorsement requires an additional nine credits along with the credits required for the major. Some courses offered in this program cover topics like children's literature, educational psychology, and child development. Students complete field experiences and work as student teachers in their senior year. An alternate route Early Childhood Education and Teacher of Students with Disabilities graduate-level program is also offered at Felician University.

Bergen Community College

Bergen Community College is located in Paramus and was founded in 1965. The school enrolls more than 14,000 students at two sites, located in Hackensack and Lyndhurst, in addition to its main campus.

Professional Studies Associate in Science (AS PS) in Early Childhood Education

Bergen Community College's AS PS in Early Childhood Education requires students to complete 65-66 credit hours of coursework. The program is designed to be completed in two years, with a total of four semesters. Students complete the general education credits required for an associate's degree, in addition to early childhood education courses that cover topics like multicultural education, child psychology, and curriculum development. The program also requires students to complete field work.

William Paterson University of New Jersey

William Paterson University of New Jersey is a public university located in the city of Wayne. The school was founded in 1855 as a normal school and today enrolls more than 10,000 students a year. Students can find early childhood education programs in the university's Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education.

Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education with Preschool - Grade 3 Endorsement

Students of this program must pursue a liberal arts of sciences major approved by New Jersey State and complete general education requirements in this program. The early childhood education major is designed to be completed in four semesters. Students take courses that focus on children's literacy, teaching math and science in an early childhood education setting, and technology in early childhood education classrooms. The program also includes a student teaching internship, and students are required to pass the PRAXIS exam before completing that portion of the program.

Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education with the Teacher of Students with Disabilities Endorsement (P-3/TSD)

While several of the ECE-focused classes are the same as those found in the previous program, this BA program focuses on inclusive classroom activities and techniques, with courses addressing planning, assessment, instructional strategies and adaptive/assistive technology. This program also contains seminars and field experiences.

Master of Education in Early Childhood Education

Applicants to the master's program should already possess a bachelor's degree and a teaching certificate. The 33-credit-hour program includes courses that focus on topics like developmental psychology, research in education, and language development, among others. Students are also required to complete a master's thesis.
