Electronic engineering technology courses are offered through a number of certificate, associate's, bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs in Maryland. Found at several area colleges and universities, these programs include courses in telecommunications, advanced analog circuits, robotics, sensor technology and computer engineering. Laboratory courses, capstone projects and internships are included in some curricula. Upper-level programs might have thesis or dissertation requirements. The programs may be offered online and they could feature transfer options.
Capitol Technology University
Located in Laurel, this private college offers undergraduate degree programs in electronics engineering technology and a graduate degree program in electrical engineering. Undergraduate students can choose career-oriented electives and become specialists in fields such as control theory, communications, telecommunications, micro-controllers or computer design. Core classes for the associate degree program include computer programming, digital electronics, microprocessors, advanced analog circuits, electronic devices, circuit analysis and robotics. For the bachelor's degree programs, course topics cover network analysis, automated test systems, digital design, noise shielding and fiber optic communications. Additional undergraduate course requirements include chemistry, algebra, physics, calculus and differential equations. The master's degree program in electrical engineering is offered completely online. Although this degree program is somewhat different from electronics engineering, many of the engineering principles are similar for professionals who are interested in designing and testing electronics equipment.
Carroll Community College
The campus in Westminster for this community college offers an associate degree program in electrical engineering. Since employers demand that professionals hold bachelor's degrees, this associate degree program was designed specifically for students to transfer easily to bachelor's degree programs at local four-year institutions, according to the school's website. Prerequisite course requirements for the associate degree program include chemistry, trigonometry, algebra, effective writing, calculus and reading comprehension. Core classes in the electrical engineering program include single variable calculus, numerical techniques, electrical circuits, programming, differential equations and digital logic designs.
College of Southern Maryland
There are four campuses for this college, and they are located in Leonardtown, La Plata, Waldorf and Prince Frederick. As of 2013, there were three electronics technology certificate programs, including a basic program, a microprocessors program and a communications program. The college also offered an associate degree program in engineering technology - electronics, and an engineering technology certificate program. Coursework in the associate degree program include basic electronics, emerging technologies, semiconductors, analog electronic circuits, computer architecture and communications circuitry. According to the school's website, the associate degree program prepares individuals for such job titles as computer technician, field service technician or electronics technician.
Howard Community College
This community college in Columbia has a certificate program and an associate degree program in electronics technology, and the school also has an associate degree program in electrical engineering. The associate degree program in electronics technology will provide students with the necessary preparation for taking industry certification exams, such as the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification exam or the A+ certification exam. Classes in the electronics technology major include computer-aided drafting and design, personal computer systems repair, wireless networks, LAN switching, microcomputer operating systems, digital circuits and electronic circuits. In the electrical engineering degree program, course topics cover digital circuits, discrete signal analysis, differential equation and digital logic design.
Johns Hopkins University
Located in Baltimore, this private university offers bachelor's degree programs in electrical engineering, a combination bachelor's/master's degree program in engineering and a regular master's degree program in engineering. Besides core electrical engineering classes, bachelor's degree students will need to take several mathematics courses, including calculus, statistics and linear algebra. Topics in electrical engineering cover digital systems, circuits, control systems, fiber optics, digital signal processing, parallel processing and programming. The bachelor's program is specifically designed for students who have already completed an associate degree in electrical engineering and takes two years to complete.
United States Naval Academy
As a military campus in Annapolis, this school only educates Navy officers, so most of the training in electrical engineering pertains to military equipment, communications devices and defense research. The bachelor's degree program in electrical engineering provides students with the opportunity to design projects at several different facilities, including the micro-fabrication laboratory, the fiber optics laboratory, the biometrics laboratory and the communications laboratory. Summer internship opportunities are also available at the Naval Research Laboratory or at the National Security Agency. Classes for this major include digital systems, microcomputer interfacing, electronics, digital communication, electrical engineering, probability applications, electromagnetism and digital signal processing.
University of Maryland - Baltimore County
This university, which is also located in Baltimore, only offers graduate degree programs in electrical engineering. The master's degree program option requires students to complete 30 units of designated coursework and commit to either completing a thesis or a project. Students in the doctoral program must complete 33 units of coursework, but they are also required to write a full dissertation about a topic in one of the approved research areas, which include photonics, communications, microelectronics, signal processing or sensor technology. Graduate-level class options include probability and random processes, solid-state electronics, detection theory, digital signal processing, lasers, biomedical microsystems, information theory, photonics and computer architecture.
University of Maryland - College Park
The campus in College Park offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in electrical engineering. Students in the bachelor's degree program can choose from a number of sub-disciplines, including communications and signal processing, microelectronics, controls, computer engineering, power systems and electrophysics. Required undergraduate courses cover such topics as electronic circuit design, electric circuits, computer organization, analog electronics, engineering probability, digital electronics, device physics and discrete signal analysis. Graduate students can earn either a master's or doctorate degree in electrical engineering. This university focuses on research at the graduate level, and available research fields include communications and networking, bioelectronics and systems, circuits and systems, optics and photonics, electronic materials and devices, robotics, signal processing or applied electromagnetics.
Professional electronics engineers require bachelor's degrees to find employment. Some employers may require workers to obtain professional engineer (PE) licenses, especially employers who hold contracts with the government.
