Postsecondary institutions in South Carolina do not currently offer programs specifically in electronics engineering. However, there are 4 schools in South Carolina that offer electrical engineering programs, which cover concepts and include courses useful to aspiring electronics engineers. Benedict College

Benedict College is located in Columbia and offers a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Electrical Engineering. Because it is an undergraduate program, its curriculum aims to give students a wide base of knowledge in electrical engineering. The program offers courses that cover electronics, computer-aided design (CAD), circuits, control systems, logistics, and electromagnetics. Students also get to complete a design project during their senior year.

Citadel Military College of South Carolina

This public college is located in Charleston and has a program in electrical and computer engineering that leads to a Bachelor of Science degree. This ABET-approved program includes a variety of courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry, English and history. During their senior year, students must choose 5 electrical engineering electives out of 13 possible options. Courses that may be of interest to electronics engineering students include electrical power systems, digital signal processing, electronics and solid-state devices.

Clemson University

Clemson University is located in Clemson and offers a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering, Master of Science in Electrical Engineering and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. The coursework within the bachelor's program encompasses engineering basics, calculus, physics and chemistry during the freshman year. If students choose electrical engineering as their area of focus, courses within the major begin in the sophomore year. Courses related to electronics engineering include electromagnetics, electric circuits, electronics and microcontroller interfacing. The bachelor's program is accredited by ABET.

The Master of Science and Ph.D. programs require incoming students to have GRE scores, but the Master of Engineering program does not have this requirement. Master of Science students have the option to complete a thesis plus final examination or additional coursework towards the end of the program. Students in the Master of Engineering program complete an engineering report in place of a thesis project. The Ph.D. program requires student to complete an additional 18 credit hours of research and 24 credit hours of graduate coursework in addition to the master's requirements.

University of South Carolina

Located in Columbia, the University of South Carolina offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in electrical engineering. The ABET-approved B.S. in Electrical Engineering program includes a few different courses that may appeal to electronics engineering students, including electromagnetics, digital signal processing, electronics and circuits. During the second semester of a student's senior year, 3 career-oriented electives are required.

The university also offers an M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, although there are a limited number of electronics courses available at the graduate level. The Master of Engineering program is designed for working engineers. The Ph.D. program requires a minimum of 48 credits of work beyond a bachelor's degree, and both of the master's programs require at least 30 hours of graduate coursework.

Career Requirements

Electronics engineers typically focus on the components that make up devices and other electronics, and electrical engineers work on larger systems and projects that use electricity. Students interested in electronics engineering training should find out if the programs they're considering are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Although licensure as Professional Engineers is not as common for electronics engineers, anyone pursuing an engineering license must have a degree from an ABET-approved school in addition to passing the necessary exams and having relevant work experience.
