There are two public schools with 40 minutes of downtown San Diego that offer EMT certification programs. Both also provide paramedic training programs. Southwestern College

EMT and paramedic certifications can be earned by students who complete the appropriate program below and pass the California certification examination.

EMT Program

In the first semester of this program, students complete a 3-unit class on first responders and emergency medical responders. Afterward, in the second semester, an 8-unit course on basic EMT skills is offered. In this program, alongside learning the proper medical techniques, students also learn the correct transportation techniques necessary for this field.

Certificate of Achievement in Emergency Medical Technology and Paramedic

To get into the emergency medical technology and paramedic certificate of achievement program, students must receive department approval. The curriculum for this certificate program is made up of classes worth 47 units in total. In addition to field training and clinical experience courses, students take classes in anatomy and physiology and advanced life support.

Associate of Applied Science in Emergency Medical Technology and Paramedic

Like the previous program, students must be approved by the correct department in order to enroll. The 47 units taken in the certificate program are also taken in this associate's degree program. Finally, students also take coursework in interpersonal communication or public speaking, general psychology, and reading and composition or critical thinking and composition.

Palomar College

The Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for Emergency Medical Services Professionals has accredited the programs for paramedic training at this school.

Certificate of Proficiency in EMT Basic

Only 10.5 units have to be earned in order to receive this EMT certificate. There are laboratory and lecture portions to this emergency medical technician program. Students also take a first responder course.

Certificate of Achievement in Paramedic Training (EMT-P)

Anatomy and physiology, paramedic preparation and emergency medical technician skills are all prerequisite classes in this paramedic training certificate program. From there, students have to complete 44 units worth of coursework. The curriculum in the paramedic training program is made up of the following classes: trauma skills, medical skills, medical training, clinical integration, hospital clinical experience and paramedic pediatric and obstetrical skills. Finally, there is an internship requirement in the program.

Associate of Science in Paramedic Training

The major coursework completed in the paramedic training certificate program is identical in the associate's degree program. The difference between the programs is that students must also complete general education classes as part of the associate's degree program. The entire program requires a minimum of 60 units.
