Ivy Tech is the biggest state-wide community college system holding a single accreditation in the country, and all its campuses combined serve almost 200,000 students annually.
  • Students may also be interested in the EMS program at Indiana University--Purdue University-Indianapolis (IUPUI), 49 miles from downtown Muncie. It has an associate's degree program in paramedic science and an EMT Basic course.

Ivy Tech Community College, Kokomo campus

The paramedic science programs near Muncie through Ivy Tech are offered at the Kokomo campus. Ivy Tech allows students to earn either a certificate in Basic Emergency Medical Studies or an Associate of Science degree in Paramedic Science.

Workforce Certification, Emergency Service Technician-Basic

Designed to prepare students to immediately become certified and work as EMT - Basics, the certificate program offered by Ivy Tech is composed of 7.5 credits. The program may be completed in as little as one semester. Students who complete the basic program are eligible to take the Emergency Medical Technician Basic Skills Certification and National Registry Basic Written Certification exams for licensing.

Associate of Science, Paramedic Science

The A.S. degree offered by Ivy Tech will prepare students to serve as EMT - Paramedics in pre-hospital and ambulance circumstances in a life-saving role. The program has been designed to allow for easy credit transfer for students planning on earning a baccalaureate degree. The program is available on a limited basis and accepts only a particular number of students each semester. Applicants to the program must hold a current EMT - Basic certification with the State of Indiana. The A.S. degree program requires a minimum of 66.5 credit hours of coursework completed over six semesters. Courses include general education classes, lecture- and classroom-based classes, and practicum courses, including an internship with ambulance services in the final semester.

Indiana University - Purdue University - Indianapolis

IUPUI offers a degree in emergency medical services that is provided through the Indiana University School of Medicine. A single EMT - Basic course is also offered by the school and available to all students. The class may be completed in one semester and also serves as a prerequisite for the following associate's program, along with 20 hours of experience.

Associate of Science, Paramedic Science

The paramedic program offered by IUPUI prepares graduates to become state- and nationally certified as paramedics. Education provided is comprehensive and focuses on skills needed to provide quality, life-saving care in out-of-hospital settings. The program requires two years to complete and constitutes a minimum of 62 credit hours, 21 hours of which entail general education prerequisites, while 41 of the hours are professional courses. Upon graduation, students are eligible to take the National Advanced Level Certification Examination for EMT - Paramedics in order to gain the professional credentials required by the Indiana EMS Commission to serve as an EMT - Paramedic.
