Monroe Community College

This school offers a program of 24-25 credits designed to prepare students for certification as an emergency medical services technician in New York. Program prerequisites include either algebra with geometry or completing a math course at the school.

Emergency Medical Services Certificate

The program includes general education requirements from a list of courses chosen to enhance a student's foundational studies. Additionally, students have course options such as death and dying, human biology, stress management and emergency medical technician. One of the program's core courses is delivered through lab, lecture and clinical experience formats to teach students pre-hospital emergency care and transportation of patients. The course also teaches students how to use EMT ambulance equipment.

Finger Lakes Community College

At Finger Lakes Community College, students can take stand-alone classes that will prepare them for different levels of EMT certification.

Emergency Medical Technician Course

The class is presented through labs, lectures and class trips that may include learning patient extrication techniques in salvage yards. Some of the topics covered in the course include scene assessment, medical terminology, patient assessment, trauma management, obstetric emergencies, pediatric pre-hospital care and emergency medical services terrorism response.

Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Course

Before taking this course, students must have New York EMT-Basic certification and maintain it through this course. The class places an emphasis on the areas of rapid assessment and intervention in field situations as well as trauma evaluation. Other areas of study include airway management, defibrillator use and intravenous infusions.

Advanced EMT Critical Care Course

To be eligible for this class, students must have current EMT-Intermediate certification in the state of New York and experience. The course includes classroom, lab and clinical components. Successful completion qualifies students to take the New York certification exam.
