There are a few 4-year public and private universities in Kentucky that feature engineering programs. Students can pursue degrees at the bachelor's, master's or doctoral levels according to their previous education and career goals. Dual-degree programs are offered at some schools. Students learn through coursework as well as through their participation in engineering projects. In Owensboro, students at Brescia University can pursue a dual degree in conjunction with the University of Louisville, a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering. Students would complete the chemistry work and general education courses at Brescia before transferring to the University of Louisville to complete the chemical engineering program.
Murray State University
At Murray's 4-year public university, aspiring engineers can pursue a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics that prepares them for the F.E. exam. This degree program includes courses in engineering measurement, dynamics, and materials science. Students must choose from one of three tracks to pursue a minimum of 18 credit hours in technical electives. Those tracks are advanced physics, biomedical engineering and electrical engineering.
University of the Cumberlands
In conjunction with the University of Kentucky, this Williamsburg-based 4-year private, not-for-profit university offers a dual degree program, the Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics: Engineering. Students complete 44 semester hours in core engineering at the University of Kentucky after completing a curriculum in applied physics at the University of the Cumberlands. In the physics degree program, students complete 24 semester hours in classical and quantum physics, science and society, and 21 semester hours in mathematics courses ranging from calculus 1 to differential equations.
University of Kentucky
In Lexington, engineering students at the University of Kentucky have access to facilities like the Kentucky Transportation Center and the Center for Applied Energy Research. They can pursue multiple ABET-accredited bachelor's degrees in engineering disciplines, as well as graduate degrees in mining engineering. While each of these majors has its own core, the math and science requirements are similar. These requirements will typically include three levels of calculus, differential equations, physics and chemistry.
At the graduate level, the Master of Science in Mining Engineering program teaches students to design mining operations and evaluate their safety. They also research new techniques in natural resources recovery. Coursework covers mining machinery, geostatistics, mining production and mine ventilation. If you are interested in teaching or researching at the university level, you may also consider the PhD program in mining engineering.
University of Louisville
Louisville's 4-year, public university offers bachelor's and master's degree programs in multiple concentrations. The University of Louisville offers ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science and Master of Engineering programs in the following engineering disciplines: electrical, mechanical, civil, bioengineering, chemical, industrial, computer engineering and computer science.
Additionally, you may also pursue a Master of Engineering in Engineering Management or a Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering. The Master of Engineering in Engineering Management degree program prepares students for supervisory roles. This program's coursework covers topics in project management, statistics, finance and operations management. Students earn their Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in order to pursue a career in an area like bio-mechanics or advanced product development.
Western Kentucky University
Located in Bowling Green, Western Kentucky University offers ABET-accredited bachelor's programs in civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering. A minor in electrical engineering is also available. This school emphasizes project-based learning, as team-based projects are a significant part of the curriculum. Through these projects, students not only learn technical skills, but teamwork and communication skills as well.
To work as an engineer, one must complete an ABET-accredited education program, pass two licensing examinations administered through the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveying (NCEES), and gain work experience. The first NCEES-sponsored exam is the Fundamentals of Engineering (F.E.) exam, which can be taken near graduation. Individuals must then gain four years of work experience to become eligible to take the Principles and Practice of Engineering (P.E.) exam. Once licensed, you will need to meet continuing education standards to remain eligible.
The Kentucky Board of Engineers and Land Surveyors issues state licenses for P.E. candidates. This board also allows professional engineer candidates to earn the license through endorsement, if the candidate has been licensed in another state.
