All of the schools in the state offer undergraduate ABET-accredited engineering degree programs, and the majority also provide graduate programs at the master's and/or doctoral level. Students can choose from among several engineering fields, such as mechanical, computer or aerospace. A few schools' undergrad programs also include a pre-med option with specialized coursework relevant to medical school preparation.
Oklahoma Christian University
Oklahoma Christian University (OC) is located in Edmond and grants both undergraduate and graduate degrees in engineering. Undergraduate students can earn a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering. Each of these degree programs requires coursework in physics and math. The computer engineering curriculum encompasses further study in digital systems design, operating systems, and programming, as well as electives in subjects such as control systems, computer architecture, digital signal processing, and network systems design. In the electrical engineering program, students receive instruction in electrical circuit analysis, microprocessors, computer systems, and engineering economics, while mechanical engineering majors take courses in thermodynamics, engineering economics, mechatronics, and machine design. Mechanical engineering students also have elective options available on topics like finite element analysis and machine dynamics.
The graduate engineering program at OC culminates in a Master of Science (MS) in Engineering and incorporates concentrations in engineering management as well as electrical/computer and mechanical engineering. All tracks include classes in mathematics, operation tools research, and engineering ethics, with the remainder of each curriculum comprising foundational emphasis courses and elective classes in the graduate field of choice.
Oklahoma State University
At Oklahoma State University (OSU) in Stillwater, the engineering programs in highest demand include the undergraduate programs in mechanical, aerospace, and civil engineering; the master's degree program in industrial engineering and management; and the electrical engineering PhD program. The bachelor's program in mechanical engineering comprises courses in heat transfer, dynamic systems, mechanical design, and thermodynamics, as well as elective options in design methods, power and propulsion, and energy conversion. In the aerospace engineering BS program, students undertake study in areas such as engineering economic analysis, compressible fluid flow, and applied aerodynamics. The undergraduate civil engineering curriculum incorporates coursework in calculus, physics, surveying, and hydraulics.
Graduate programs in all of these disciplines are also available. Industrial engineering master's degree students may choose to complete a thesis, an independent study project, or additional coursework in lieu of either option; in addition, they must select one of the following emphases: operations research, general systems, enterprise systems and supply chains, quality and reliability, engineering management, facilities and energy management, or manufacturing systems. Electrical engineering PhD students undergo classes in such subjects as automatic control systems, communication theory, and discrete-time systems and signals, along with preliminary, qualifying, and final program exams. Undergraduate programs in industrial engineering and electrical engineering as well as a PhD program in industrial engineering and management are also offered, and OSU additionally awards a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering technology. In addition, undergraduate and/or graduate degrees in chemical, and biosystems and agricultural engineering are available.
Oral Roberts University
Students may pursue a bachelor's degree in engineering, biomedical engineering, or engineering physics at Tulsa-based Oral Roberts University (ORU). In the engineering program, students select a specialization in mechanical, computer, or electrical engineering, each of which includes classes in areas like engineering management, thermodynamics, and network analysis. The mechanical concentration comprises study in fluid mechanics, control systems design, and finite element method, while the computer specialization requires coursework in electronics, data structures, and microprocessor systems design. Electrical engineering majors complete additional classes in electromagnetic theory and electronics. The biomedical engineering program includes courses on topics like engineering graphics, organic chemistry, human physiology, and biology, and engineering physics majors receive instruction in subjects like quantum mechanics, optics, computational methods in engineering, and static mechanics. Students in all the undergraduate engineering programs at ORU must complete general education courses in disciplines like history, English, and theology.
Southwestern Oklahoma State University
Based in Weatherford, Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) houses two programs in engineering. The Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics curriculum encompasses study in quantum mechanics, physics, rigid body mechanics, calculus, and chemistry, along with a minimum number of credits from among topics such as magnetism and electricity, materials science, and fluid mechanics. The engineering technology bachelor's degree program includes classes in fabrication processes, statistical methods, machine drafting, and industrial safety; in addition, engineering technology majors pursue a concentration in computer engineering technology, environmental engineering technology, or manufacturing engineering technology. The computer engineering emphasis comprises further instruction in subjects that include communications electronics and electronic troubleshooting, while the environmental engineering track incorporates classes in physical geology, environmental chemistry, and manufacturing processes. The engineering technology program's manufacturing concentration requires coursework in mechanical controls, machine tool processes, and automation. SWOSU's campus also hosts a Society of Manufacturing Engineers student chapter.
University of Central Oklahoma
Located in Edmond, the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) offers a bachelor's degree program in biomedical engineering, as well as bachelor's and master's degree programs in engineering physics. Premedical and bioinstrumentation concentrations are available in the biomedical engineering program, with the curricula for both tracks including classes in engineering ethics, chemistry, and calculus. The premedical emphasis encapsulates further study in electrical science, dynamics, and cell biology; students pursuing the bioinstrumentation specialization undergo courses in differential equations and math physics, as well as classroom and laboratory instruction in human physiology. UCO's undergraduate program in engineering physics includes emphases in physics, electrical systems, and mechanical systems. In the physics concentration, students complete courses in solid-state devices and engineering optics. Electrical systems students undertake classes in analog electronics and microprocessors, while those in the mechanical systems specialization learn about thermal systems design and heat transfer. The MS in Engineering Physics program incorporates instruction in subjects such as photonics, nuclear physics, analytical mechanics, and electrodynamics.
University of Oklahoma
The University of Oklahoma (OU) awards numerous degrees in engineering at its campuses in Norman and Tulsa. At the undergraduate level, the school confers the highest number of engineering degrees in mechanical, chemical, and electrical engineering; the electrical and computer engineering graduate program accounts for the most master's engineering degrees awarded. The undergraduate mechanical engineering program includes an optional premedical track that incorporates study in zoology and organic chemistry, in addition to standard mechanical engineering curriculum requirements in areas like solid mechanics, electrical circuits, and mechanics. In the chemical engineering bachelor's degree program, students choose from among emphases in premedical/biomedical, biotechnology, or standard chemical engineering and complete classes in subjects such as separation processes, analytic geometry, and electromechanical systems. Electrical engineering majors learn about energy conversion, signals and systems, electromagnetic fields, and engineering statistics.
Electrical and computer engineering master's degree students may choose a thesis or non-thesis program of study. OU also awards degrees in various other fields of engineering, including bioengineering/biomedical, industrial, aerospace, and civil, among others. In addition, the school houses joint degree programs in many of the engineering disciplines that offer students the opportunity to earn a bachelor's and a master's degree on an accelerated basis.
University of Tulsa
Located in Tulsa, this university awards a variety of engineering degrees. The bachelor's degree programs in petroleum, mechanical, and chemical engineering and the master's and PhD programs in petroleum engineering are the most popular engineering programs at the University of Tulsa (TU). In addition to these, TU also hosts undergraduate programs in electrical engineering and engineering physics, as well as master's degree programs in chemical engineering, electrical engineering, engineering physics, and mechanical engineering. PhD programs are offered in chemical engineering and mechanical engineering. Engineering facilities at the TU campus include a petroleum drilling simulator; computers equipped with computational fluid and finite element software programs; and prototyping, materials characterization, semiconductor characterization, optical research, and condensed matter labs.
To enter most engineering professions, students will need at least a bachelor's degree in their respective engineering field, as well as a high-level understanding of industry standards, computers, and math skills.
